Dry and Rather Warm

Temperature

The average maximum temperature during August 2025 in Shoreham was 23.1 Celsius (73F), and that was around 0.5 Celsius (>1F) above normal. The average minimum temperature was 14.2 Celsius (58F), and that was close to the monthly average. Overall, August 2025 was the 11th warmest in the area since 1880, but 3 out of the last 5 Augusts were warmer, although temperatures were similar to those of August in the legendary Summer of 1976.

The highest temperature measured during the month was 29.1 Celsius (84F) on the 12th, but 28.6 Celsius (83F) occurred on the 11th, and 28.2 Celsius (83F) was recorded on the 15th. The only other day when the temperature rose above 25 Celsius (77F) was the 19th, when 26.1 Celsius (79F) occurred. On most other days the maximum temperature ranged from 21 to 25 Celsius (70-77F). There were just 2 exceptions. On the 28th a high of 20.7 Celsius (69F) occurred, and on the 4th the temperature only reached 19.5 Celsius (67F).        

There were no exceptionally warm nights during August, but a minimum of 18.4 Celsius (65F) occurred on the 12th, with 18.1 Celsius (65F) recorded on the 13th. A further 3 nights, the 14th, 18th and 27th, had minima above 17 Celsius (63F). On most other nights (19) the minimum temperature ranged from 11 to 15 Celsius (52-59F). Only 1 cooler night occurred, and that was on the 22nd , when 9.7 Celsius (49F) was recorded.   

The sea temperature was 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) throughout the month.

Frost

No frosts occurred during August. The lowest grass minimum temperature was 5.0 Celsius (41F) on the 22nd.

Rain

Rainfall during August amounted to 24.2  millimetres (0.95 inches), which was around 40% of the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 7 days, which was 5 days below normal for August, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 3, which was 6 days below average for the month.  Rain and drizzle produced 0.6 millimetres (0.02 ins.) on the 4th, but this was the only measurable rain that occurred between the 1st and the 25th. The weather then turned changeable for the remainder of the month, with showers occurring from mid-morning on the 26th; and a longer spell of rain and drizzle fell during the afternoon and evening of the 30th. Some of the showers were heavy, especially during the evening of the 27th, around mid morning on the 28th, and early in the morning on the 29th. Daily rainfall totals for the last 6 days of August included 2.6 millimetres (0.1 ins.) on the 27th, 16.6 millimetres (0.65 ins.) on the 28th and 3.2 millimetres (0.13 ins.) on the 30th.   

Hail

No hail was observed in this part of Shoreham.  

Thunder

There was lightning and 1 lengthy rumble of thunder just after 0800 hours on the 29th.

Snow

No sleet or snow occurred in this part of Shoreham.

Wind

The weather pattern during the first three and a half weeks of August was mainly anticyclonic, with the centres of the high pressure mainly to the west and north of the country. As a result, winds often blew from a northwesterly quadrant, although several east or northeasterly days occurred after mid month. Overall, winds were mostly moderate during this period, but the last week of the month was more cyclonic and generally breezier with southwesterly winds dominating. At Shoreham Airport, southwesterly winds gusted to 35 knots (42 mph) on the afternoon of the 4th, but no further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred until late in the evening of the 28th, when southwesterly gusts reached 31 knots (35 mph). A gust of 32 knots (36 mph), once again from the southwest, occurred after daybreak on the 29th. Several gusts of 31 knots (35 mph) from a southerly direction were recorded on the evening of the 30th, but no further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred during the rest of the month.

Fog

Misty low cloud occurred late in the afternoon on the 12th, but no fog was observed.

Temperature

The average maximum temperature during June 2025 in Shoreham was 22.0 Celsius (72F), and that was over 1 Celsius (>2F) above average. The average minimum temperature was 14.0 Celsius (57F), and that was nearer 2 Celsius (>3F) above average. Overall it was the 2nd warmest June since records began in the area in 1880. Only the June of 2023 was warmer.

The highest temperature measured during the month was 29.7 Celsius (85F) on the 21st, but 28.9 Celsius (84F) occurred on the 30th, and 28.2 Celsius (83F) and 28.0 Celsius (82F) were recorded on the 20th and 19th respectively. A further 17 days had maxima above 20 Celsius (68F), but only the 13th, with a high of 27.1 Celsius (81F), had a maximum temperature above 25 Celsius (77F). There were 9 days with maxima below 20 Celsius (68F), and those days were the first 9 in the month. No particularly low temperatures occurred, but on 2 days maxima were below 17 Celsius (63F). On the 3rd, a high of 15.6 Celsius (60F) occurred, and on the 5th a maximum of 16.7 Celsius (62F) was recorded.       

There were several warm nights during June. On the 20th, a low of 18.3 Celsius (65F) occurred, with 18.2 Celsius (65F) measured on the 28th. A further 2 nights, the 21st and 26th, had minima above 17 Celsius (63F). Many nights (15) had minima ranging from 12 to 16 Celsius (54-61F), but 7 nights were cooler. Only 1 of these nights, the 17th, occurred after mid month, the remainder occurred before the 9th. The coolest nights of the month were 4th and 8th. They shared a minimum temperature of 9.4 Celsius (49F).   

The sea temperature hovered around 15 or 16 Celsius (59-61F) during the first 10 days of June, before rising steadily, to reach 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) by the end of the month.

Frost

No frosts occurred during June. The lowest grass minimum temperature was 5.6 Celsius (42F) on the 4th.

Rain

Rainfall during June amounted to 16.4  millimetres (0.65 inch), which was around 30% of the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 10 days, which was around normal for June, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 6, which was 1 day below the average.  Although the first day of the month was dry, the weather became unsettled, and rain was measured on each day between the 3rd and 7th. Amounts of rain were small, with 3 millimetres (0.12 ins.) measured on both the 4th and 6th, and 4 millimetres (0.16 ins.) on the 7th, making it the wettest day of the month. Only 2 more ‘wet’ days occurred during June. On the 13th, a total of 2.4 millimetres (0.09 ins.) of rain was recorded, and 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.) of rain fell on the 25th. Small amounts of rain fell on other days, but the 14th to 20th, along with the 27th to the end of the month, were completely dry.  

Hail

No hail was observed in this part of Shoreham.  

Thunder

There was thunder and lightning for about an hour and a half on the evening of the 13th. Most of the activity was to the east and northeast. Thunder occurred in the early hours of the 22nd, but rain in association with the storm was negligible.

Snow

No sleet or snow occurred in this part of Shoreham.

Wind

Pressure was higher than average over southern England during June, but the centres of the anticyclones were mainly to the south. Apart from a few days during the third week, winds were mostly from a southwesterly direction. On many days the winds were gentle or moderate during the morning, increasing to fresh, occasionally strong, in the afternoon because of sea-breeze enhancement. At Shoreham Airport, southwesterly winds gusted to 31 knots (35 mph) on the afternoon of the 1st, and 36 knots (41 mph) from the same direction on the afternoon of the 3rd. A repeat on the afternoon of the 6th produced a gust of 31 knots (35 mph). Southwesterly winds during the early hours of the 23rd gusted to 31 knots (35 mph), and reached 32 knots (37 mph) on the afternoon of the same day. The 24th was also breezy with the southwesterly wind gusting to 32 knots (37 mph) at midday. The afternoon was breezy again on the 26th with the peak gust of 32 knots (37 knots) occurring, as on most other breezy days, between 4 and 5 pm. No further gusts exceeded 30 knots (34 mph).

Fog

No fog was observed, but misty low cloud occurred on the morning of the 28th.

Dry and Very Mild

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during April 2025 in Shoreham was 17.3 Celsius (63F), and that was 3 Celsius (>5F) above average. Only 2 years, 2007 and 2011, have had higher average maxima, in records dating back to 1880. It was the sunniest April in England since records began in 1910, and this was a significant factor in the much higher than average day-time temperatures. The average minimum temperature was 7.1 Celsius (45F), and that was around 1 Celsius (<2F) above average.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 24.8 Celsius (77F) on the 30th, but 23.9 Celsius (75F) was recorded on the 29th, and 23.2 Celsius (74F) occurred on the 4th. On most days (19) the maximum temperature ranged from 15 to 20 Celsius (59-68F) which was still above the long-term average. There were a few cooler days around the middle of the month and into the third week, but none of these days had maxima below 14 Celsius (57F). There were 2 more cooler days, and these occurred on the 9th and 10th with highs of 12.7 and 13.7 Celsius (55 and 57F) respectively.       

After the sunny days there were many clear nights and this allowed plenty of cooling to occur. As a result, there were no particularly mild nights, although on 4 occasions the temperature remained above 10 Celsius (50F). The mildest night was the 4th with a low of 11.3 Celsius (52F), closely followed by the 19th when 11.2 Celsius (52F) was recorded. On the majority of nights (20) the minimum temperature ranged from 5 to 10 Celsius (41-50F), but several colder nights occurred, these mainly during the second and third weeks. Although 5 nights had minima below 4 Celsius (39F), only 2 of these colder nights had lows under 3 Celsius (37F). The 10th and 11th had lows 2.1 and 2.2 Celsius (36F) respectively.   

The sea temperature steadily rose from around 9 Celsius (48F) at the beginning of April, to 13 Celsius (55F) at the end of the month.

Frost

No air frosts occurred during April. There were 2 very slight grass frosts. On both the 1st and 11th grass minima of minus 0.6 Celsius (31F) were recorded.

Rain

Rainfall during April amounted to 25.2  millimetres (1 inch), which was around 60% of the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 7 days, which was 2 below normal for April, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) only numbered 3, which was 3 days below the average.  The first 11 days of April had no measurable rain, but light rain on the night of the 12th/13th brought to an end a 16-day dry spell. Only 0.4 millimetres (0.2 ins.) were recorded, but rain overnight on the 14th was somewhat heavier and amounted to 3.6 millimetres (0.14 ins.). Despite the 16th and 17th being dry, the weather remained rather changeable, although the highest rainfall total between the 18th and 21st was only 2.2 millimetres (0.09 ins.) on the 19th. However, on the night of the 22nd and 23rd there were spells of heavy rain. In fact almost three quarters of the monthly rainfall fell between midnight and 9 o’clock in the morning. The total was 18.2 millimetres (0.72 ins.). It was also the last measurable rain during April.  

Hail

No hail was observed in this part of Shoreham.

Snow

No sleet or snow occurred in this part of Shoreham.

Wind

The usual procession of weather fronts from the Atlantic did not occur again during April, a recurring feature of the last 3 months. The first and last weeks of the month were anticyclonic, but around the middle of the month the weather was more cyclonic.Half of the daily wind readings were from between north and east, and only quarter of the days had southwesterly winds. Most other winds blew from the southeast with northwesterlies entirely absent. Generally, winds were light, with the strongest breezes blowing from the northeast early in the month. At Shoreham Airport, gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) were uncommon. Northeasterly winds on the afternoon of the 2nd peaked at 31 knots (35 mph), and on the late evening of the 15th southwesterly winds gusted to 34 knots (39 mph). It stayed breezy into the early hours of the 16th when 33 knots (38 mph) occurred. An isolated gust to 31 knots (35 mph) from the east-southeast occurred on the morning of the 19th, and that was the last significant gust of the month.

Fog

No fog was observed in this part of Shoreham.

Dry, but often Cloudy

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during February 2025 in Shoreham was 8.3 Celsius (47F), and that was 1 Celsius (<2F) below the 10-year average, but close to the 30-year average. The average minimum temperature was 4.1 Celsius (39F), and that was close to the 10-year average, but more than 1 Celsius (2F) above the 30-year February average.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 12.3 Celsius (54F) on the 21st, but 4 days had maxima between 11 and 12 Celsius (52-54F), and a further 4 days had highs between 10 and 11 Celsius (50-52F). Apart from on the 5th, when a maximum of 10.4 Celsius (51F) occurred, all the milder days were recorded after the 19th. Although no particularly cold days occurred, each day between the 7th and 17th inclusive had maximum temperatures below 7 Celsius (45F). The only other day that failed to reach 7 Celsius (45F) was the 1st, when 6.3 Celsius (43F) was recorded. The lowest maxima during the rather cold spell, were 4.7 Celsius (40F) on the 10th and 5.0 Celsius (41F) on the 7th, although a further 4 days had highs between 5 and 6 Celsius (41-43F).       

The 21st was the mildest night in February with a low of 10.2 Celsius (50F), but 9.4 Celsius (49F) was recorded on the 24th, and 9.1 Celsius (48F) on the 22nd. A further 4 nights had maximum temperatures between 7 and 8 Celsius (45-46F). Only 1 of the milder nights occurred before the 20th; that was on the 4th when 7.9 Celsius (46F) was recorded. No other nights had minima above 5 Celsius (41F), however, on 14 nights the minimum temperature ranged from 2 to 5 Celsius (36-41F). A few colder nights occurred, with lows of 0.2 and 0.7 Celsius (32-33F) on the 17th and 26th respectively, but the coldest night of the month was the 3rd when a minimum of minus 1.8 Celsius (29F) was recorded.   

The sea temperature stayed around 7 or 8 Celsius (45-46F) throughout the month.

Frost

There was 1 air frost during February, and that was 3 below average. There were 13 grass frosts, and that was average for the month. These mostly occurred in 3 short spells. From the 1st to the 6th (5 nights); from the 14th to the 18th (4 nights); and from 26th to the 28th (3 nights). Most of the grass frosts were very slight, but minus 3.9 Celsius (25F) was recorded on both the 5th and 17th, with minus 5.0 Celsius (23F) occurring on the 3rd.

Rain

Rainfall during February amounted to 37.2  millimetres (1.46 ins.), which was around half the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 13 days, which was 3 below normal for February, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 8, which was also 3 days below the average.  The early part of February was very dry. Although the period between the 1st and 18th inclusive had 6 days of measurable rain, it only yielded 7.4 millimetres (0.29 ins.) with the highest daily total just 2.0 millimetres (0.08 ins.) measured on the 7th. In fact, between the 11th and 18th there was no measurable rain. After the 18th, it was much more unsettled. Even so, there were only 2 particularly wet days, with the 21st and 23rd having 10.2 and 13.0 millimetres (0.4 and 0.5 ins.) respectively. The next highest daily total was 3.4 millimetres (0.13 ins.) on the 26th. The last 2 days of the month were dry.  

Hail

Graupel, formerly called soft hail, was observed amongst the rain mid-morning and early afternoon on the 7th.  

Thunder

No thunder was heard in this part of Shoreham during February.

Snow

No sleet or snow occurred in this part of Shoreham.

Wind

February, like January, was not a ‘southwesterly’ month, with daily wind readings almost equally divided among the quadrants. Overall, February was an anticyclonic month, and even during the unsettled spell during the fourth week, daily pressure readings were mostly between 1015 and 1020 millibars. Wind speeds ranged from light to moderate throughout the month with very few exceptions. At Shoreham Airport, the only gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred late evening on the 23rd, and late morning on the 26th, when southwesterly gusts peaked at 32 knots and 35 knots (37 and 40 mph) respectively.

Fog

Fog occurred in the morning, and around mid afternoon, on the 22nd. Low cloud shrouded the hills at times on the 8th and 20th.

Rather Cold and Wet

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during January 2025 in Shoreham was 7.3 Celsius (45F), and that was 1 Celsius (<2F) below normal. The average minimum temperature was 2.5 Celsius (37F), and that was also 1 Celsius (<2F) below the January normal.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 11.8 Celsius (53F) on the 5th, but 11.4 Celsius (53F) occurred on the 1st, and a further 5 days had maxima above 10 Celsius (50F), including 3 consecutive days, commencing on the 26th. On most other days (16) the maximum temperature ranged from 5 to 10 celsius (41-50F), but there were several colder days. In fact, 8 days had maxima below 5 Celsius (41F), including 4 consecutive days, beginning on the 8th. The temperature failed to reach 4 Celsius (39F) on only 3 of these days. The 18th and 19th had maxima of 3.2 and 3.9 Celsius (38-39F) respectively, but the coldest day of the month was the 10th, with a high of 3.1 Celsius (38F).       

Only 1 very mild night occurred in January, and that was the first night of the month, when a minimum of 10.8 Celsius (51F) was recorded. The next mildest night was the 28th, with a low of 8.9 Celsius (48F), although a further 3 nights, the 15th, 16th and 27th, had minima above 7 Celsius (45F). The majority of nights (17) had minima ranging from minus 1 to plus 4 Celsius (30-39F), although there were several colder nights. A total of 5 nights, the 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th had minima below minus 2 Celsius (28F), but only 2 of these nights had minima below minus 3 Celsius (27F). On the 3rd, minus 3.1 Celsius (27F) was recorded, and on the 12th a low of minus 3.7 Celsius (25F) occurred.   

The sea temperature, around 10 Celsius (50F) at the beginning of January, fell close to 7 Celsius (45F) by the end of the month.

Frost

There were 9 air frosts in January, and that was 3 above average. Although the frost on the 12th bordered on moderate (the minimum was minus 3.7 Celsius (25F)), the other recorded frosts were slight, with 3 of the nights having minima above minus 1 Celsius (30F). Only 3 of the air frosts occurred after mid month, with the coldest night on the 20th, with a low of minus 1.2 Celsius (30F). There were 19 grass frosts during January, and that was 6 above the average. A total of 11 grass frosts occurred before mid-month, including on 8 consecutive nights beginning on the 7th. The other 8 grass frosts occurred after the 19th. On 6 nights, all during the first half of January, grass temperatures dipped below minus 5 Celsius (23F). The lowest reading was minus 7.8 Celsius (18F), with this occurring on 3 nights, the 3rd, 10th and 12th.

Rain

Rainfall during January amounted to 118.6  millimetres (4.7 ins.), which was around 70% above the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 15 days, which was 2 below normal for January, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 10, which was also 2 days below the average.  The year began wet, with 17.8 millimetres (0.7 ins.) measured on the 1st. The following 2 days were dry, but 32.0 millimetres (1.26 ins.) of rain fell on the 4th, and that was the wettest January day in Shoreham for 16 years. It rained all day on the 5th with another 14.0 millimetres (0.55 ins.) added to the monthly total. Apart from the 8th, when 10 millimetres (0.4 ins.) were recorded, the period between the 6th and 20th was largely dry, with only 0.4 millimetres (0.02 ins.) recorded. Half of that was from melted frost on the night of the 11th. After the 20th, the month was changeable with only 1 dry day, the 25th. Some of the rain was heavy with 11.6 millimetres (0.46 ins.) falling on the 23rd, another 12.8 millimetres (0.5 ins.) measured on the 26th, and over 5 millimetres (0.2 ins.) on each of the last 3 days of the month.  

Hail

No hail was observed in this part of Shoreham during the month.  

Thunder

No thunder was heard in this part of Shoreham during January.

Snow

Sleet and wet snow fell from mid afternoon until early evening on the 8th. Around 1 centimetre (< 1 in.) of slush accumulated on most surfaces by late afternoon, but had thawed by the morning of the 9th. However, the Shoreham Airport webcam showed snow on the higher parts of Shoreham, and this remained visible for several days.

Wind

January was not a ‘southwesterly’ month, although winds from that direction were dominant on roughly a third of the days. The middle part of the month was mostly anticyclonic, with winds often light and variable. Whereas at either end of January it was windier, with winds either from the southwest, or the southeast, ahead of Atlantic weather fronts, followed by northwesterly winds once the frontal systems had passed to the east. At Shoreham Airport, the year began very windy, with gusts from the southwest frequently exceeding 30 knots (34 mph). The highest gust was 45 knots (51 mph) in the late morning before the wind quickly abated early in the afternoon. Late in the evening of the 4th, southeasterly winds peaked at 33 knots (38 mph) and the southwesterly wind that followed the passage of the frontal system on the morning of the 5th also gusted to 33 knots (38 mph). It stayed windy for a further 24 hours, and the southwesterly wind gusted to 38 knots (43 mph) early in the morning on the 6th. The next spell of windy weather was not until the 23rd. On the afternoon of the 23rd, southwesterly gusts reached 35 knots (40 mph), and after the briefest of lulls, the southwesterly wind gusted to 45 knots (53 mph) on the morning of the 24th. The 26th was a windy day, but with the wind blowing from the south or southeast. The highest gust was in the afternoon, with 39 knots (45 mph) recorded. The southwesterly wind that followed lasted through until the 28th. A gust of 46 knots (53 mph) occurred in the early hours of the 27th, with several gusts over 40 knots (46 mph) during the rest of the day. Gusts of 41 knots (47 mph) were recorded overnight on the 28th, but then the wind began to decrease, and no further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred during the rest of the month.

Fog

There was no fog observed in this part of Shoreham, but there were several dull days around mid-month, and on these days, the cloud lowered on to the higher parts of the town and produced hill fog.

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during November 2024 in Shoreham was 11.4 Celsius (52F), and that was close to the long-term average, but 0.5 Celsius (<1F) below average for the last 10 years. The average minimum temperature was 7.0 Celsius (45F), and that was  1 Celsius (<2F) above the long-term November normal, but average for the last 10 years.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 16.2 Celsius (61F) on the 24th, but this was the only maximum temperature above 15 Celsius (59F). A high of 14.2 Celsius (58F) occurred on the 1st, and a further 9 days had maxima above 13 Celsius (55F), with 6 of these milder days occurring before mid-month. Most other days (14) had maxima ranging from 10 to 13 Celsius (50-55F). On 2 of the remaining days, the 9th and 28th, maxima were between 8 and 10 Celsius (46-50F), but there was the briefest of cold snaps. The 4 days commencing on the 19th each had highs below 8 Celsius (46F), with 3 of these having maximum temperatures under 6 Celsius (43F).  A high of 5.4 Celsius (41F) was recorded on the 19th, and 3.8 Celsius (39F) was measured on the 21st.       

There were no exceptionally mild nights during November, but the temperature only fell to 13.2 Celsius (56F) on the 24th, with 12.4 and 12.2 Celsius (54F) measured on the 1st and 3rd respectively. A further 4 nights had minima above 10 Celsius (50F), with 3 of these milder nights occurring during the first week of November. On most other nights (15) the minimum temperature ranged from 5 to 10 Celsius (41-50F), but there were some colder nights, with all of these occurring after mid-month. On 6 nights the temperature dipped below 2 Celsius (36F), with first of these colder nights occurring on the 16th, and the last one on the 28th. The coldest nights occurred between the 20th and 23rd with the lowest temperature of minus 1.4 Celsius (29F) occurring on the 22nd.   

The sea temperature decreased steadily from 15 Celsius (59F) at the beginning of November to 11 Celsius (52F) at the end of the month.

 

Frost

 

There were 3 air frosts in November, all of them slight. The temperature fell to minus 1.1 Celsius (30F) on the 20th, minus 0.6 Celsius (31F) on the 21st, and minus 1.4 Celsius (29F) on the 22nd. The 23rd just missed an air frost with a low of 0.2 Celsius (32F). There were 7 grass frosts during November. The first of these occurred on the 16th, when minus 2.2 Celsius (28F) was recorded. The 26th and 28th each had grass minima of minus 1.1 Celsius (30F), but the lowest grass temperatures occurred between the 20th and 23rd. Each night had a temperature of minus 3.9 Celsius (25F) or lower, with minus 5.6 Celsius (22F) occurring on the 22nd. 

 

Rain

 

Rainfall during November amounted to 76.2  millimetres (3 ins.), which was around 15% below the long-term average, but 30% below the short-term average. Measurable rain fell on 12 days, which was 5 days below the average, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) numbered 10, which was 3 days below the average.  The first half of November was very dry, with only 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins.) of rain measured. This fell as drizzle on the 6th. The dry spell was characterised by extremely dull weather. For example, at Charlwood (near Gatwick Airport) no sunshine was recorded between the 31st October and 11th November, a total of 12 days. The anticyclonic gloom then lifted, but after mid-month it turned unsettled. The 28th was the only completely dry day after the 16th, but even so, much of the rain was light, with only 4 days registering daily falls above 4 millimetres (0.16 ins.). Steady rain in the afternoon, evening and overnight on the 18th produced 18.0 millimetres (0.71 ins.). Wet weather on both the 23rd and 24th, gave 8.2 millimetres (0.32 ins.) and 14.0 millimetres (0.55 ins.) respectively. Heavy overnight rain was the main contributor to the 24.6 millimetres (0.97 ins.) that made the 26th the wettest day of the month.  

 

Hail

No hail was observed in this part of Shoreham during the month.  

 

Thunder

There was just 1 rumble of thunder heard in this part of Shoreham during October. This was late in the evening on the 8th.

 

Snow

 

Flakes of snow were briefly observed amongst the rain around mid morning on the 21st.

 

Wind

 

November was an anticyclonic month overall with the mean pressure over 8 millibars above average. With the high pressure centres mainly over, or to the west of,  the British Isles, the dominant winds were from between northwest and northeast, with these directions accounting for over two thirds of the daily oibservations. In fact, dominant winds from a southwesterly direction only occurred on 3 days, all of these in the second half of the month. Winds were mainly light or gentle until the end of the third week, but they were stronger at times thereafter, especially during the fourth week of November. At Shoreham Airport, a brief interlude of southwesterly winds gusted to 34 knots (39 mph) in the early hours of the 19th, with southwesterly winds producing a very windy day on the 23rd. Gusts in excess of 40 knots (46 mph) were frequent during the day, with several gusts reaching 45 knots (51 mph) in the late afternoon and evening. The wind generally decreased in strength after midnight, but gusts from the southwest continued to exceed 30 knots (34 mph) throughout the 24th, with peak gusts of 41 knots (47 mph) around mid-morning. The last gusts of the month above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred early on the 27th, with southwest winds responsible for gusts of 31 knots (35 mph).

 

 

Fog

 

There was no fog in this part of Shoreham, but webcams suggested that fog shrouded the hills at times early in the month.

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature during August 2024 in Shoreham was 22.6 Celsius (73F), and that was around 2 Celsius (3.5F) above the long-term average, but near average for the last 10 years. In fact,  average  day-time temperatures this August were the 14th highest in the area since 1880. The average minimum temperature was 15.0 Celsius (59F), and that was around 1 Celsius (<2F) above the August normal, but more than 2 Celsius (3.5F) above the long-term average. Nights during August were the 8th warmest in the area since 1880.    

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 27.9 Celsius (82F) on the 11th, but 26.7 Celsius (80F) was recorded on both the 1st and 12th. The only other day when the temperature exceeded 25 Celsius (77F) was on the 28th, when 25.2 Celsius (77F) was recorded. On most other days the maximum temperature ranged from 20 to 25 Celsius (68-77F) with only 2 exceptions. On the 22nd a high of 18.4 Celsius (65F) occurred, but the coolest day of the month was the 24th,  when the temperature only reached 18.1 Celsius (64F).      

There were several warm nights during August, and the minimum on the 12th was 21.7 Celsius (71F). This was only 0.1 Celsius (<0.2F) below the August record set in 2020. Minima between 18.0 and 18.2 Celsius (64-65F) occurred on 4 nights, all before the 10th; and a further 4 nights had lows above 17 Celsius (63F). On many nights (14) the minimum temperature was between 12 and 14 Celsius (54-57F), but on 3 nights, the 7th, 19th and 25th, the temperature fell below 12 Celsius (54F). The coolest of these nights was the 25th, with a low of 10.9 Celsius (52F).   

The sea temperature was 19 or 20 Celsius (66-68F) throughout the month.

 

Frost

 

There were no frosts in August. The lowest grass temperature was 7.2 Celsius (45F),  on both the 19th and 25th. 

 

Rain

 

Rainfall in August amounted to 47.8 millimetres (1.88 ins.), which was around 25% below the monthly average. Measurable rain fell on 7 days, which was 6 days below the average, and wet days (when 1 millimetre (0.04 ins.), or more, of rain falls) also numbered 7, which was 2 days below the average. No measurable rain fell during the first 5 days of August, but rain and drizzle produced 1.8 millimetres (0.07 ins.) on the 6th, and heavier rain and drizzle gave 6.6 millimetres (0.26 ins.) on the 8th. It was heavy drizzle and rain that added 8.4 millimetres (0.33 ins.) on the 15th. There were only 3 days with measurable rain during the first 3 weeks of August, but then the remainder of the month’s rain fell in 4 days. Drizzle was mainly responsible for the 4.8 millimetres (0.19 ins.) that fell on the 22nd, but heavy rain overnight and during the morning of 24th gave 15.4 millimetres (0.61 ins.) and 7.0 millimetres (0.27 ins.) on the 2 ‘rain days’ (0900-0900 UTC): the 23rd and 24th respectively. Showery bursts of rain on the 25th completed the total for the month with 3.8 millimetres (0.15 ins.).

Snow

 

No sleet or snow was observed in Shoreham.

 

Wind

 

August was very much another southwesterly month with winds from that quadrant blowing on over 70% of the days. Other days were more variable, but at the end of the month there were 2 days when northeasterly winds dominated. Winds were mainly gentle or moderate, but quite strong at times during the third and fourth weeks. At Shoreham Airport, southwesterly winds gusted to 31 knots (35 mph) around midnight on the 8th/9th, and 32 knots (37 mph) was recorded, from a similar direction, late in the afternoon on the 15th. The 22nd and 23rd were both windy days. The southwesterly gusts peaked at 32 knots (37 mph) on the late morning of the 22nd, and 40 knots (46 mph) after dawn on the 23rd. No further gusts above 30 knots (34 mph) occurred during August

 

 

Fog

 

No fog was observed in this part of Shoreham during the month, although several days had mist, drizzle and hill fog, especially during the first half of August.
